Staff turnover in long term care has always been challenging but has dramatically worsened with the pandemic and the Great Resignation. CMS began posting the staff turnover rates and weekend staffing levels at every nursing home on the Medicare.gov Care Compare website beginning in January 2022. Consumers will be able to use this information to better inform their decisions regarding nursing home selection for themselves or a loved ones.

Staff turnover includes the percent of nursing staff and number of administrators that no longer work at the facility over a 12-month period. Weekend staff level refers to the total nursing staff and RN staffing on the weekends provided by the facility on a quarterly basis. This information will be taken from the Payroll Based Journal (PBJ) reporting program. More information about these new data metrics can be found in the CMS QSO-22-08-NH.
